BEST LUBRICANT for an AR15

What’s the best lubricant, oil or grease for an AR15? That’s one of the questions that I am frequently asked on one of my other sites. While I cant scientifically state what is best I can tell you what works for me from the sub zero temperatures of northern Vermont to the 100 degree plus days in my home state.

AR15 OIL:

MOBIL 1 Synthetic Motor Oil

MOBIL 1 Synthetic Motor Oil

I like to keep lubing my AR15′s simple. You the reader will be shocked to learn my favorite oil for an AR15 is MOBIL 1 SYNTHETIC MOTOR OIL. The same that is used in my Toyota Tundra. One quart is about $8 and last a long time. I keep the BOLT CARRIER lubricated with MOBIL 1.

Now if the MOBIL 1 is just too easy and not exotic or expensive enough for your AR15 there are other suitable alternatives such as Militec 1, Mil-Comm and Froglube. They all work well. Here’s the thing though READ THE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE USE. Some of these lubricants require the parts to be degreased and heated to a certain temperature before application.

AR15 GREASE:

Mobil Grease 28 Synthetic Aviation Grease

Mobil Grease 28 Synthetic Aviation Grease

Once again it’s a Mobil product. This time it’s MOBIL 28 Synthetic Aviation Grease about $13 for a 13.7 oz tube. This is the same red grease supplied with Geissele triggers. It’s important to not that Geissele used to provide a superior grease in the Mobil FM 102. Unfortunately Mobil discontinued the FM 102. The named replacement is Mobil FM 222  which is off white in color and cost twice as much as the FM 102.

Anyhow the same brands listed in the oil section above offer very good grease.

I like to use grease on the trigger, bolt lugs, safety and takedown/pivot pins.

Due to several states having ASSAULT WEAPONS BANS that began before the federal ban was implemented it would be helpful to obtain further information on monufacture date versus serial number for many of the lesser know AR-15 manufacturers prior to the 1994 ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN.

Please feel free to add your Brand, Serial Number and manufacture date in the comments section of the PREBAN AR15 page.

Preban AR15 Serial Numbers – PWA Commando, Olympic Arms, Bushmaster, Colt, Sendra, Advanced Armaments, Bohica, American Spirit Arms, Essential Arms, Eagle Arms, DPMS, Dalphon, Frankford Arsenal, Hesse, J.L.M & Sons, Knights Armament ,Military Manufacturing (M2), Nesard

BROWNELLS AR15 ROLL PIN HOLDER PUNCH SET

BROWNELLS AR15 ROLL PIN HOLDER PUNCH SET

One of my pet peaves from folks who assemble their own AR15 rifles is the sloppy installation of the various roll pins the AR15 rifle requires. In all fairness there are a few roll pins that present a challenge to the inexperienced and experienced alike. The BOLT CATCH ROLL PIN comes to mind as does the FORWARD ASSIST ROLL PIN. The BOLT CATCH ROLL PIN is positioned quite close to the body of the LOWER RECEIVER and requires a ROLL PIN PUNCH to have a flat side to properly install.

I have searched the internet shooting forums and websites as well polled user of my own forums for a better way to install roll pins. In that search I found some creative approaches but nothing that worked any better than my own approach of taping a ROLL PIN to a ROLL PIN PUNCH. Well that was then this is now. Brownell offers a ROLL PIN STARTER SET they refer to as ROLL PIN HOLDERS. The pins are available individually or as a set for just under $50. I opted for the set.

BROWNELLS AR15 ROLL PIN HOLDER OPERATION:

The roll pin holders are genius.  As seen in the image above the ROLL PIN HOLDERS are simply a punch that has a hollow tip the diameter of a given roll pin.  Place the ROLL PIN in the correct ROLL PIN PUNCH HOLDER and with a plastic faced or brass hammer carefuly tap in the ROLL PIN.  To prevent damage to the the WEAPON stop hammering before the ROLL PIN HOLDER contacts the part that accepting the ROLL PIN. At that point switch to a regular ROLL PIN PUNCH, the type with a half round nose and finish driving the ROLL PIN flush.

NOTES ON ROLL PIN HOLDER USE:

  1. Cover any part of your weapon with masking tape followed by duct tape in an area that could be damaged from ROLL PIN INSTALLATION. The masking tape serves as a great protector for your weapon. The underlying masking tape makes duct tape removal a simple process.
  2. Grease – I like to apply a small amount of grease in the ROLL PIN HOLE to help with proper installation. I also add a small amount of grease to the inside of the ROLL PIN HOLDER to help prevent the ROLL PIN from falling out and getting lost should I have a brain lapse.
  3. For finishing the BOLT CATCH ROLL PIN INSTALLATION I suggest the BOLT CATCH PIN PUNCH from Brownells. It is almost entirely flat on one side making installing the BOLT CATCH ROLL PINthe rest of the way a breeze.

GEISSELE TRIGGER

GEISSELE TRIGGER

In the half-dozen or so years I have been operating firearms oriented websites and forums I have noticed certain trends with shooters building and upgrading their AR15 and M4 platform weapons. Very often appearance is taking presidence over function in two key areas. These two areas are barrel quality choices and trigger selection. The barrel and trigger are two of the most important weapon parts that enable you to hit your target.

This page will be part 1 BUILDING AN AR15 – UNDERSTANDING PRIORITIES PART 1 – AR15 TRIGGERS of a 2 part series BUILDING AN AR15 – UNDERSTANDING PRIORITIES

AR15 TRIGGERS

Unless you spent several thousands of dollars on a custom or high-end AR15 chances are your trigger was designed by an attorney to protect a firearm manufacturer. In fact one manufacturer DPMS has publicly stated that they expect you to replace your trigger and that the included trigger is merely there so you can fire the weapon when new.

The fact is you simply can not expect to get the greatest amount of accuracy out of your weapon with a factory trigger or the trigger included in a lower parts kit.

REPLACING YOUR AR15 TRIGGER SHOULD BE YOUR FIRST AND FOREMOST PRIORITY before you spend a single penny on any other part.

Now here is the downside of aftermarket triggers. You get what you pay for. However there is a law of diminishing returns. his means a $400 trigger is not necessarily twice as good as a $200 trigger. Will the most expensive trigger be better? You bet, but not every shooter needs a trigger  THAT GOOD. If you can afford the best go for it you wont be disappointed. If cant buy what you can afford. DO SOMETHING.

I break the triggers down this way.

AR15 Triggers Under $100:

  • BILL SPRINGFIELD – Spend $50 and send your factory trigger to Bill Springfield for a trigger job. It’s better than nothing and he turns them around very quickly.
  • ARMALITE TWO STAGE TACTICAL TRIGGER – At $97 it’s a good deal. Problem with the Armalite triggers is nobody bothers to learn how to adjust them so the triggers are often criticized. read the Armalite tech note here.
  • ALG DEFENSE – This is new and unknown to me but they are getting decent reviews and priced slightly higher that the trigger job mentioned above.

AR15 Triggers $100-$150

Got a few choices here.

  • JARD TRIGGERS – I have a few AR15′s with JARD TRIGGERS. I like everything about these triggers except the installation.
  • ROCK RIVER ARMS TWO STAGE TRIGGER – A lot of folks buy this trigger and are happy with it. There are those that claim the steel is soft and they don’t last. I have no personal experience but RRA cant keep these triggers on the shelf
  • ARMALITE AR15 NATIONAL MATCH SET TRIGGER – See my comments above in the sub $100 section. These are great triggers with proper installation and adjustment. Read the installation Tech Note here.

AR15 Triggers $150-$200

  • CMC AR15 TRIGGER – This is probably the ugliest modular drop in trigger of the bunch. What it lacks in looks it makes up for in performance. In fact the CMC AR15 TRIGGER is one of my favorite triggers at any price for the AR15 platform.
  • JP RIFLES – JP Rifles produces a very good trigger. If you order one be sure to order the speed hammer as well as they are meant to work together. JP includes a video of the installation. That is a nice touch.
  • GEISSELE SSA TRIGGER – The GEISSELE SSA is I believe the least expensive of the GEISSELE TRIGGERS. It’s a good trigger at a fair price.

AR15 Triggers $200 and up

  • TIMNEY – I like the Timney a lot problem is that unless you can find it for less than $200 the CMC in the previous section is a better choice
  • ATC AR GOLD – I ave no experience with the AR GOLD TRIGGER but I have a LOT of experience with the ATC SR GOLD TRIGGER for the 308 AR and AR-10 platforms. In fact the SR GOLD is my favorite trigger for the 308 platform. I would not hesitate to recommend the ATC GOLD. ATC/PACT has outstanding customer service.
  • GEISSELE – By most accounts the best AR Trigger
  • JEWELL AR15 TRIGGER – Unfortunately Jewell isn’t as good with AR15 triggers as they are with traditional rifle triggers. There are better choices.
  • WILSON COMBAT TACTICAL TRIGGER UNIT – I have no experience with the WILSON COMBAT TTU as they are never in stock when I am looking for a trigger.

As you see above there are options for every price point. Choose what fits your budget even if it means going without a new muzzle device, pistol grip, laser, tac light, or fancy collapsable stock or some other tactical gizmo that will do nothing to inprove the accuracy of you and your weapon..

START WITH THE TRIGGER

Stay tuned for  part 2 in the series BUILDING AN AR15 – UNDERSTANDING PRIORITIES PART 2 – AR15 BARRELS

PREBAN AR15 INFORMATION RESOURCES

Preban AR15 information is very valuable to shooters in states that maintain an ASSAULT WEAPON BAN. While I dont normally advocate borrowing content from other websites I feel this information is invaluable and needs to be protected, duplicated and shared for the greater good of the shooting community.

If anyone has more information and links please post them at the bottom and I will update the list. If you have a lower of  from one of the lesser known brands and have managed to verify the date to the serial number please add your info to the comments and I will add it to the master list.

OLYMPIC ARMS

What does my serial number mean?

Q:  What does my serial number mean?

A: Nothing is more frustrating than to know little or nothing about the firearm you own or are about to buy.  Use the information in this page to help determine when your Olympic Arms firearm was produced.  Please read all of the details on this page because there are many questions answered in the following paragraphs.

As many of you already know, on the 7th of June, 2000, Olympic Arms experienced a devastating fire that destroyed our sales offices. In those offices were housed our current as well as archival records with regards to manufacture, acquisition and distribution of firearms. The books that we, as well as all federally licensed firearms dealers are required to keep are commonly known as “Bound Books”, or “A&D” (acquisition & distribution) books.

These books, over 25 years of Olympic Arms history and data, were completely destroyed in that fire. All A& D book records prior to the 7th of June, 2000 are GONE. Period. This is an unfortunate situation that severely limits our ability to provide product information for any and all AR-15 lower receivers and/or complete guns manufactured prior to that date. As a result all that we can provide is what you see below, a date “range” in which your serial number was manufactured.

We CANNOT provide you with the date the serial number was shipped, we CANNOT provide you with information determining whether a particular serial number was a factory assembled firearm, and most importantly, we CANNOT determine whether or not your particular serial number is a legal grandfathered pre-ban firearm.

Many people and organizations have been critical of Olympic Arms for not securing a copy of these records elsewhere, or keeping an electronic file of this data as an emergency back up. If you’d like to read why this decision was made, please read the article in the About Us section titled “Pre-fire Bound Books”.  Remember that Olympic Arms fully complied, and still does, with ATF regulations regarding A&D books.

Below you will see a list of serial numbers. At Olympic, we group our serial numbered lowers into “ranges”. If you’ll notice, all the serial number ranges have a letter prefix but one. The initial receivers made by Olympic Arms simply contain a 4 digit serial number, no letter prefix. Each subsequent serial number range (either beginning with 0001, or 1001) will show a 1 or 2 letter prefix.

Additionally, you will see several lines for serial numbers that begin with the same letter(s) prefix. These prefix series are divided by a date range to their right. These date ranges are the beginning and ending dates of the physical paper ledgers in which those numbers were recorded. In other words, the ledger books were not large enough to contain all of the numbers (0001-9999), in one book. For that reason, there is a beginning date and end date for each ledger. That is what you see below.

Match your receiver up with the letter prefixes on the chart below. Each line is separated into 5 columns.

Column 1: The serial number itself (including prefix).

Column 2: The beginning serial number in that book.

Column 3: The beginning date for that book. If there is only one date listed after the serial numbers in column 2 and/or 2, all of those numbers were manufactured on that same day.

Column 4: End date for that book.

Column 5: Comments regarding that range of serial numbers. The comments as listed would apply to all of the serial numbers with the prefix listed to the left.

I have compiled this list for the purposes of sharing information only. This is not intended to be used in any way except for personal entertainment. It is a compilation of both personal information and information submitted from others from the Internet. ALL SERIAL NUMBERS SHOULD BE VERIFIED FROM THE MANUFACTURER PRIOR TO ANY PURCHASE OR ASSEMBLY. It should be noted that it is a felony to possess a Post-Ban (newly assembled after Sept 13, 1994) assault weapon.

If any information presented here is found to be incorrect or you have additional information to contribute, please contact me via E-Mail (hkusp40@midmaine.com) and I will update and re-issue the list.

Olympic Arms 360-459-7940
4-numbers only – very very old. Probably machined from bar stock.
1-letter and 4# – older receiver, but forgings. (Some are newer, POST ban castings – call to verify.)
2-letters & 4# – most receivers follow this pattern.
2#, 2 letters, 4# – the first two #’s are year of manufacture of the lower.
2 letters, 6# (separated 2 & 4 – e.g. SA 96 0000) – first 2 #’s are year of manufacture.
“ICR” marked lowers are an European customer’s overrun, has an unused additional hole – all ICR lowers are post ban.

Olympic Arms Manufacturer’s Notes:
1. There were some odd variations and some custom serial numbers mixed in thru the years also. And, some receivers manufactured after the ban have the year stamp after the model name, not in the serial #. And if you don’t see a year stamp on the receiver, it is not necessarily pre-ban.

2. Serial numbers that end in “D” were duplicates and one was changed using this letter.

3. Recently some serial numbers have left with one or two letters followed by FIVE numbers. The last numbers are either 5′s or 0′s. 99.9% of these are post-ban.

4. “Older” does not always mean pre-ban as per Corey Sattler.

5. “BL” serial number series lowers are transitional with some pre and some post ban. If you have a “BL” you’ll have to call to verify for certain.

Professional Ordinance
All are post ban (including all of the pistols).
